Our Work

deinstitutionalisation

Children belong in a family.

OrphanCare Foundation wants Malaysian children to live and grow up in a loving family environment. Our vision is a world where children no longer suffer institutional care nor face threats to their survival. We believe a child has a right to love, security, shelter, health and education as enshrined in Malaysia’s Child (Amendment) Act 2016 and the United Nation’s Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). Our work involves Deinstitutionalisation,Community Services and Advocacy.

Deinstitutionalisation

deinstitutionalisation

OrphanCare Foundation believes children should grow up in a family environment. This is the right of a child. Our vision is a Malaysia where children are no longer placed in institutional care.In pursuit of this we advocate and work to take children out of institutions and have them grow up instead in loving homes and families. To make this work we need to strengthen family units and community based support services. This process is called ‘Deinstitutionalisation’ (DI). We urge the various child care institutions in Malaysia to transition to family based care. Promoters and financial supporters should urgently advise their organisations about this paradigm shift.

Community Services

community service

OrphanCare helps institutionalised children, families, prospective adoptive parents, adoptive and foster parents and women facing an unplanned pregnancy. We take a holistic approach with regards our clients’ physical, social, medical, educational and legal needs. Our service programmes were developed through trial and error and are designed to suit local requirements. They also comply to the Malaysian Child (Amendment) Act 2016, the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development regulations and guidelines and follow international best practice. Orphancare targets becoming a resource centre and consultancy on matters concerning DI and a safe haven for mothers in distress.

Advocacy

  • Influencing and leading change in the child care sector.
  • Ending the institutionalisation of children in Malaysia and moving towards a family and community based child care system.
  • Advocating that children should rejoin their families.
  • Developing a new paradigm with regards the problem of baby abandonment and helping young women and couples facing a parenthood crisis.
